Pharmacological Class:
Fluoroquinolone antibiotic

Indications:
Used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including:

• Respiratory tract infections (e.g., bronchitis, pneumonia)

• Urinary tract infections

• Skin and soft tissue infections

• Gastrointestinal infections

• Prostatitis and sexually transmitted infections (e.g., gonorrhea)

Mechanism of Action:
Ofloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes necessary for DNA replication, transcription, and repair. This inhibition leads to bacterial cell death.

Dosage:

• Typical adult dose: 200–400mg every 12 hours, depending on infection type and severity.

• Taken before or after meals with a full glass of water.

• Duration: usually 7–14 days, as prescribed by a physician.

Precautions:

• Avoid use in pregnancy, breastfeeding, or children unless prescribed.

• Use with caution in patients with renal impairment or CNS disorders (e.g., epilepsy).

• Avoid excessive sunlight or tanning beds during treatment.

• Do not take concurrently with antacids, iron, or zinc supplements (reduce absorption).

• Complete the full course even if symptoms improve early.
