Tenormin 100 mg (28 Tablets)

Active Ingredient:

• Atenolol 100 mg

Therapeutic Class:
Selective Beta₁-Adrenergic Blocker (Cardioselective Beta-Blocker)

Indications:

• Hypertension (high blood pressure)

• Angina pectoris (chest pain due to heart disease)

• Cardiac arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats)

• Secondary prevention after myocardial infarction (heart attack)

Dosage:

• Hypertension: 50–100 mg once daily.

• Angina: 100 mg once daily or 50 mg twice daily.

• Arrhythmias: 50–100 mg daily, adjusted as needed.

• Post-myocardial infarction: Usually 100 mg once daily, started after stabilization.

• May be taken with or without food.

• Dosage should be adjusted for renal impairment.

Mechanism of Action:
Atenolol selectively blocks beta₁-receptors in the heart, reducing heart rate, myocardial contractility, and cardiac output. This leads to:

• Lowered blood pressure

• Reduced oxygen demand by the heart

• Prevention of abnormal heart rhythms

Precautions:

• Contraindicated in:

  • Severe bradycardia or heart block

  • Cardiogenic shock

  • Untreated heart failure

  • Hypersensitivity to atenolol

• Caution in:

  • Diabetes mellitus (may mask hypoglycemia)

  • Peripheral vascular disease

  • Thyrotoxicosis (may mask tachycardia)

  • Asthma or COPD (may cause bronchospasm)

• Gradual withdrawal is advised to avoid rebound hypertension or angina.

Possible Side Effects:

• Fatigue or dizziness

• Bradycardia (slow heart rate)

• Cold hands and feet

• Gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, diarrhea)

• Sleep disturbances or vivid dreams (rare)

• Hypotension
