Pharmacological Class:

Indications:
Used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including:

• Respiratory tract infections (bronchitis, pneumonia)

• Urinary tract infections

• Skin and soft tissue infections (acne, boils, cellulitis)

• Sexually transmitted infections (chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis)

• Eye infections

• Tick-borne diseases (e.g., Lyme disease, typhus)

• Malaria prophylaxis in travelers

Mechanism of Action:
Inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, preventing amino acid addition to growing peptide chains. This stops bacterial growth and replication.

Dosage:

• Usual adult dose: 100mg once or twice daily, depending on infection type and severity.

• Should be taken with a full glass of water, preferably after a meal to reduce stomach irritation.

• Avoid lying down for at least 30 minutes after taking the capsule to prevent esophageal irritation.

Precautions:

• Contraindicated in children under 8 years and pregnant or breastfeeding women (may cause tooth discoloration and bone growth inhibition).

• Avoid taking with milk, dairy products, antacids, or iron supplements within 2 hours (reduces absorption).

• Use cautiously in patients with liver impairment.

• Protect skin from sunlight — increased risk of photosensitivity.

Possible Side Effects:

• Nausea, vomiting, stomach pain

• Diarrhea or heartburn

• Photosensitivity (sunburn easily)
