Cefixime 400 mg

Pharmacological Class:
Third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic

Indications:
Used to treat bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms, including:

• Upper and lower respiratory tract infections (pharyngitis, tonsillitis, bronchitis)

• Otitis media

• Urinary tract infections

• Gonorrhea (uncomplicated)

• Skin and soft tissue infections

Mechanism of Action:
Cefixime inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial lysis and death.

Dosage and Administration:

• Adults and adolescents (≥12 years): 400 mg once daily, or 200 mg every 12 hours.

• Route: Oral

• May be taken with or without food, though taking it after meals can minimize gastrointestinal upset.

Precautions:

• Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to cephalosporins or penicillins.

• Use cautiously in patients with renal impairment; dosage adjustment may be required.

• Complete the full course even if symptoms improve early.
