Indications:

• Relief of muscle spasticity associated with conditions such as multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, or chronic back pain.

• Treatment of acute painful muscle spasms due to musculoskeletal disorders (e.g., cervical or lumbar pain).

Mechanism of Action:
Tizanidine acts on α₂-adrenergic receptors in the spinal cord to inhibit presynaptic motor neuron activity, leading to reduced muscle tone and relief from spasticity and pain.

Dosage:

• Typical adult dose: 2–4 mg up to three times daily, depending on severity.

• Maximum recommended total daily dose: 36 mg.

• For mild cases, 5 mg once or twice daily may suffice.

• Dose should be individualized and titrated gradually.

Precautions:

• Avoid abrupt discontinuation to prevent rebound hypertension and tachycardia.

• Use cautiously in patients with liver impairment; monitor liver function regularly.

• May cause drowsiness—avoid driving or operating machinery.

• Avoid combining with strong CYP1A2 inhibitors (e.g., ciprofloxacin, fluvoxamine).

• Alcohol and CNS depressants may increase sedation.
