Ciprofloxacin 500 mg

Pharmacological Class:
Fluoroquinolone antibiotic

Indications:
Used for treatment of bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms, including:

• Urinary tract infections (UTIs)

• Respiratory tract infections (bronchitis, pneumonia)

• Gastrointestinal infections (infectious diarrhea, typhoid fever)

• Skin and soft tissue infections

• Bone and joint infections

• Prostatitis

• Certain sexually transmitted infections

Mechanism of Action:
Ciprofloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for DNA replication and repair, resulting in bacterial cell death.

Dosage and Administration:

• Typical adult dose: 250–750 mg every 12 hours, depending on infection type and severity.

• Route: Oral

• Tablets should be swallowed whole with water, before or after meals.

• Avoid taking with dairy products or calcium-fortified juices to prevent reduced absorption.

• Maintain good hydration during therapy.

Precautions:

• Contraindicated in patients allergic to ciprofloxacin or other fluoroquinolones.

• Caution in patients with seizure disorders or CNS conditions.

• Avoid excessive sunlight or tanning beds (risk of photosensitivity).

• May interact with antacids, iron, or zinc supplements—take these at least 2 hours apart.

• Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless essential.

Possible Side Effects:

• Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea

• Abdominal discomfort

• Headache or dizziness

• Photosensitivity reactions

• Rare: tendonitis or tendon rupture (especially in elderly or corticosteroid users)

• Very rare: peripheral neuropathy, changes in mood or sleep
