Medication Name: Uvamin Retard 100mg Capsules

Active Ingredient:
Nitrofurantoin 100 mg (in sustained-release form)

Pharmacological Class:
Urinary antiseptic / antibacterial (nitrofuran derivative)

Dosage Form:
Prolonged-release capsules for oral administration — 20 capsules per pack

Indications:

• Treatment of acute uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs)

• Prophylaxis of recurrent urinary tract infections

Mechanism of Action:
Nitrofurantoin interferes with bacterial enzyme systems involved in carbohydrate metabolism, leading to inhibition of cell wall synthesis, DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis. It is bactericidal in urine at therapeutic concentrations.

Dosage and Administration:

• Adults: 100 mg twice daily (every 12 hours) with food or milk.

• Prophylaxis: 50–100 mg once daily at bedtime.

• Capsules should be swallowed whole; do not chew or crush.

Side Effects:

• Gastrointestinal upset (nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite)

• Headache, dizziness

• Urine discoloration (dark yellow or brown, harmless)

• Rarely: pulmonary reactions, hepatotoxicity, or peripheral neuropathy with prolonged use

Precautions:

• Contraindicated in severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance < 60 mL/min).

• Not recommended in late pregnancy (at term) or in infants <1 month due to risk of hemolytic anemia.

• Periodic monitoring of liver and renal function is advised in long-term therapy.

• Take with food to improve absorption and reduce gastrointestinal effects.
