Spectone 25 mg (20 Tablets)

Active Ingredient:

• Spironolactone 25 mg (Potassium-sparing diuretic and aldosterone antagonist)

Therapeutic Class:
Diuretic (Aldosterone antagonist)

Indications:

• Management of hypertension (high blood pressure), usually in combination with other antihypertensive agents.

• Treatment of edema due to congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis, or nephrotic syndrome.

• Management of primary hyperaldosteronism (Conn’s syndrome).

• Treatment of hypokalemia (low potassium) when other measures are inadequate.

• Off-label uses: hormonal acne, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and hirsutism in females due to its anti-androgenic effects.

Dosage:

• Usual adult dose: 25–200 mg per day, depending on the condition and response.

• For mild hypertension or acne: typically 25–50 mg once daily.

• Should be taken with food to improve absorption and minimize stomach irritation.

• Dose adjustments should be made under medical supervision.

Precautions:

• Contraindicated in patients with hyperkalemia, severe renal impairment, or Addison’s disease.

• Monitor serum potassium and kidney function regularly, especially when combined with ACE inhibitors, ARBs, or potassium supplements.

• Caution in elderly or dehydrated patients.

• May cause hormonal side effects such as menstrual irregularities, breast tenderness, or gynecomastia (in men).

• Limit intake of potassium-rich foods and salt substitutes containing potassium.

Possible Side Effects:

• High potassium levels (hyperkalemia)

• Dizziness, lightheadedness, or weakness

• Nausea, vomiting, or abdominal discomfort

• Fatigue or drowsiness

• Menstrual cycle changes or breast tenderness

• Rare: rash, itching, or gynecomastia
