Pharmacological Class:

Indications:
Used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including:

• Urinary tract infections (UTIs)

• Respiratory tract infections (bronchitis, pneumonia)

• Gastrointestinal infections (including traveler’s diarrhea, typhoid fever)

• Skin and soft tissue infections

• Bone and joint infections

• Gonorrhea and other sexually transmitted infections

Mechanism of Action:
Ciprofloxacin inhibits bacterial enzymes DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are essential for DNA replication, transcription, and repair. This results in bacterial cell death.

Dosage and Administration:

• Adults: 500 mg every 12 hours (may vary depending on infection type and severity).

• Route: Oral

• Take with a full glass of water.

• Avoid taking with milk, yogurt, or calcium-fortified drinks, as they may reduce absorption.

• Complete the prescribed course even if symptoms improve.

Precautions:

• Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to fluoroquinolones.

• Use cautiously in patients with renal impairment, seizures, or CNS disorders.

• Avoid direct sunlight exposure; ciprofloxacin may increase photosensitivity.

• Do not take within 2 hours of antacids, iron, or zinc supplements.

• Avoid use with tizanidine (risk of severe hypotension).

Possible Side Effects:

• Nausea, diarrhea, or abdominal discomfort

• Dizziness, headache, insomnia

• Photosensitivity reactions

• Rare: tendon inflammation or rupture (especially in elderly patients or corticosteroid users)

• Rare allergic reactions or QT prolongation
