Pharmacological Class:

Indications:
Indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms, such as:

• Urinary tract infections (UTIs)

• Respiratory tract infections (bronchitis)

• Gastrointestinal infections (infectious diarrhea)

• Skin and soft tissue infections

• Bone and joint infections

• Certain sexually transmitted infections

Mechanism of Action:
Ciprofloxacin acts by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes critical for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, and repair, leading to bacterial cell death.

Dosage and Administration:

• Adults: 250 mg every 12 hours, depending on infection type and severity.

• Route: Oral

• Take with a full glass of water.

• Avoid taking with dairy products or calcium-fortified drinks, as they can reduce absorption.

• Complete the full course as prescribed.

Precautions:

• Contraindicated in patients allergic to fluoroquinolones.

• Use with caution in patients with renal impairment, seizure disorders, or history of tendon disorders.

• Avoid excessive sunlight exposure during treatment.

• Do not take within 2 hours of antacids, iron, or zinc supplements.

• Avoid concurrent use with tizanidine.

Possible Side Effects:

• Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal discomfort

• Dizziness, headache, or insomnia

• Photosensitivity reactions

• Rare: tendon inflammation or rupture (especially in elderly patients or those using corticosteroids)

• Rare allergic reactions or QT interval prolongation
