Spectone 100 mg (20 Tablets)

Active Ingredient:

• Spironolactone 100 mg (Potassium-sparing diuretic and aldosterone antagonist)

Therapeutic Class:
Diuretic (Aldosterone antagonist)

Indications:

• Management of hypertension (high blood pressure), usually as part of combination therapy.

• Treatment of edema associated with heart failure, liver cirrhosis, or nephrotic syndrome.

• Management of primary hyperaldosteronism (Conn’s syndrome).

• Treatment of hypokalemia (low potassium levels).

• Sometimes used off-label for hormonal acne, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or hirsutism (excess hair growth) due to its anti-androgenic effect.

Dosage:

• Usual adult dose: 25–200 mg daily, depending on the indication and clinical response.

• For hypertension or edema: typically 25–100 mg once or twice daily.

• Should be taken with food to enhance absorption and reduce stomach irritation.

• Dose adjustments are made gradually under medical supervision.

Precautions:

• Contraindicated in patients with hyperkalemia (high potassium levels), severe renal impairment, or Addison’s disease.

• Regular monitoring of serum potassium and renal function is essential.

• Caution in elderly patients and those using ACE inhibitors, ARBs, or potassium supplements.

• May cause menstrual irregularities or breast tenderness in women, and gynecomastia in men.

• Avoid excessive potassium-rich foods (e.g., bananas, oranges) unless advised by a physician.

Possible Side Effects:

• Hyperkalemia (high potassium levels)

• Dizziness or lightheadedness

• Nausea, vomiting, or stomach upset

• Fatigue or drowsiness

• Menstrual changes, breast tenderness or enlargement

• Rash or itching (rare)
