Medication Name: Amrizole 100 ml IV Vial

Active Ingredient (per 100 ml):

• Metronidazole 500 mg

Pharmacological Class:
Nitroimidazole antimicrobial (antibacterial and antiprotozoal)

Dosage Form:
Intravenous infusion (IV solution)

Indications:

• Anaerobic bacterial infections (intra-abdominal, pelvic, or respiratory)

• Septicemia and endocarditis caused by anaerobic organisms

• Bone and joint infections

• Central nervous system infections (e.g., brain abscess)

• Gynecological infections (pelvic inflammatory disease, endometritis)

• Prophylaxis for anaerobic infections in surgery (especially colorectal and gynecological)

Mechanism of Action:
Metronidazole enters bacterial and protozoal cells and disrupts DNA synthesis through formation of toxic intermediates, leading to cell death.

Dosage and Administration:

• Adult usual dose: 500 mg (one vial) every 8 hours by slow IV infusion over 30–60 minutes.

• Adjust dose in patients with severe hepatic impairment.

• Do not administer by IV bolus injection.

• Switch to oral therapy as soon as possible when clinically appropriate.

Side Effects:

• Nausea, vomiting, or metallic taste

• Headache or dizziness

• Local irritation at injection site

• Rare: seizures, peripheral neuropathy, or allergic reaction

Precautions:

• Avoid alcohol during and for 48 hours after therapy (risk of disulfiram-like reaction)

• Use with caution in patients with liver disease, central nervous system disorders, or history of blood dyscrasias

• Monitor liver function in prolonged therapy

• Not recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy unless clearly needed

• Store below 25°C

• Protect from light

• Do not freeze

• Use immediately after opening the vial
