Medication Name: Ozempic 1 mg Pre-filled Pen

Active Ingredient:
Semaglutide 1 mg per dose

Pharmacological Class:
GLP-1 receptor agonist (Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 analogue)

Indications:
Used in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus to:

• Improve glycemic control as monotherapy or in combination with other oral antidiabetic drugs or insulin.

• Reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events (such as heart attack, stroke, or death) in patients with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease.

Dosage Form:
Pre-filled multidose injection pen containing 4 mg/3 ml solution for subcutaneous injection (delivers 1 mg per dose).

Administration:

• Inject subcutaneously once weekly in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm.

• Rotate injection sites each week.

• The 1 mg dose is typically the maintenance dose following dose escalation from 0.25 mg → 0.5 mg → 1 mg as tolerated.

• Can be taken at any time of day, with or without meals.

Mechanism of Action:
Semaglutide mimics the human incretin hormone GLP-1, enhancing glucose-dependent insulin secretion, reducing glucagon release, delaying gastric emptying, and increasing satiety to reduce calorie intake and body weight.

Common Side Effects:

• Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation

• Abdominal discomfort or bloating

• Loss of appetite

• Headache, fatigue

• Injection site redness or itching

Precautions:

• Not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

• Monitor for symptoms of pancreatitis (persistent severe abdominal pain).

• Avoid use in patients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2.

• Adjust dose of concomitant insulin or sulfonylureas to prevent hypoglycemia.

Storage:

• Store unused pens in a refrigerator (2–8°C).

• After first use, the pen can be stored at room temperature (below 30°C) or in a refrigerator for up to 6 weeks.

• Protect from light and heat. Do not freeze.
