Indications:

Klacid 500 mg tablets are prescribed for moderate to severe bacterial infections, including:

• Respiratory tract infections: pharyngitis, sinusitis, bronchitis, pneumonia

• Skin and soft tissue infections: cellulitis, folliculitis, impetigo

• Helicobacter pylori infection (as part of combination therapy for peptic ulcer disease)

• Certain dental and ear infections

Mechanism of Action:

• Clarithromycin binds to the 50S subunit of bacterial ribosomes.

• It inhibits protein synthesis, stopping bacterial growth and reproduction (bacteriostatic effect).

• Effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

Dosage and Administration:

• Typical adult dose: 250–500 mg every 12 hours (twice daily) for 7–14 days.

• In H. pylori therapy, often used at 500 mg twice daily with other medications (e.g., amoxicillin and omeprazole).

• Can be taken with or without food, but taking with food may reduce stomach discomfort.

• Swallow tablets whole with water; do not crush or chew.

• Complete the entire prescribed course, even if symptoms improve early.

Side Effects:

• Common: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain

• Metallic or bitter taste

• Headache or dizziness

• Rare: rash, allergic reactions, elevated liver enzymes, QT prolongation (in patients with heart conditions)

Warnings and Precautions:

• Avoid if allergic to macrolides (e.g., erythromycin, azithromycin).

• Use with caution in patients with liver or kidney impairment.

• May interact with other medications such as:

  • Statins (simvastatin, lovastatin)

  • Warfarin

  • Carbamazepine, theophylline, digoxin, ergot derivatives

• Avoid alcohol during treatment.

• Discontinue and consult a doctor if severe diarrhea or allergic reaction occurs.
