Medication Name: Duricef 500 mg Suspension
Active Ingredient: Cefadroxil 500 mg per measured dose (concentration may vary by formulation)

Pharmacologic Class: First-generation cephalosporin antibiotic


Indications:

  • Respiratory tract infections such as tonsillitis, pharyngitis, and bronchitis.

  • Urinary tract infections, including cystitis and pyelonephritis.

  • Skin and soft tissue infections such as cellulitis and impetigo.

  • Bone and joint infections (in mild to moderate cases).


Dosage and Administration:

  • Adults: Dose depends on infection type and severity, commonly 500 mg to 1 g every 12 hours.

  • Children: Dose based on body weight, usually 25–50 mg/kg/day in divided doses every 12 hours.

  • Shake the suspension well before each use.

  • Take with or without food; if stomach upset occurs, it can be taken with food.

  • Complete the full prescribed course even if symptoms improve.


Contraindications:

  • Hypersensitivity to cefadroxil, other cephalosporins, or any component of the product.

  • History of severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to penicillins.


Precautions:

  • Use with caution in patients with kidney impairment (dose adjustment may be required).

  • Cross-allergy can occur between penicillins and cephalosporins.

  • Prolonged use may lead to secondary fungal or bacterial infections.

  • Stop immediately and seek medical help if allergic reactions occur (rash, itching, swelling, or difficulty breathing).


Common Side Effects:

  • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea

  • Abdominal discomfort

  • Mild skin rash or itching

  • Headache

Serious Side Effects (rare):

  • Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis)

  • Liver dysfunction (yellowing of skin or eyes)

  • Severe or persistent diarrhea (may indicate antibiotic-associated colitis)


Storage Conditions:

  • Store the dry powder at room temperature before reconstitution.

  • After reconstitution, keep the suspension refrigerated (2–8°C) and discard after 10–14 days.

  • Shake well before each dose.
