Medication Name: Duricef 250 mg Suspension
Active Ingredient: Cefadroxil 250 mg per 5 mL

Pharmacologic Class: First-generation cephalosporin antibiotic


Indications:

  • Respiratory tract infections such as tonsillitis, pharyngitis, and bronchitis.

  • Ear, nose, and throat infections (such as otitis media and sinusitis).

  • Urinary tract infections, including cystitis and pyelonephritis.

  • Skin and soft tissue infections such as impetigo and cellulitis.


Dosage and Administration:

  • Children: Usually 25–50 mg/kg/day in two divided doses every 12 hours, depending on the severity of infection.

  • Adults: Dosage depends on infection type; 500 mg to 1 g every 12 hours may be used for similar conditions.

  • Shake the suspension well before each dose.

  • Can be taken with or without food; if stomach upset occurs, take with meals.

  • Complete the full course even if symptoms improve.


Contraindications:

  • Hypersensitivity to cefadroxil, other cephalosporins, or any component of the medication.

  • History of severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to penicillins.


Precautions:

  • Use with caution in patients with kidney impairment (dose adjustment may be needed).

  • Possible cross-sensitivity between cephalosporins and penicillins.

  • Long-term or repeated use may cause secondary infections such as fungal overgrowth.

  • Discontinue immediately and seek medical attention if allergic symptoms occur (rash, itching, swelling, or breathing difficulty).


Common Side Effects:

  • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea

  • Abdominal discomfort

  • Mild rash or itching

  • Headache

Serious Side Effects (rare):

  • Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis)

  • Liver dysfunction (yellowing of skin or eyes)

  • Severe or persistent diarrhea (may indicate Clostridium difficile infection)


Storage Conditions:

  • Store the dry powder at room temperature before mixing.

  • After reconstitution, keep refrigerated (2–8°C) and discard after 10–14 days.

  • Shake well before each dose.

  • Keep tightly closed and out of reach of children.
