Pharmacological Class:

Indications:
Used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including:

• Urinary tract infections (UTIs)

• Respiratory tract infections (bronchitis, pneumonia)

• Gastrointestinal infections (infectious diarrhea, typhoid fever)

• Skin and soft tissue infections

• Bone and joint infections

• Prostatitis

• Certain sexually transmitted infections caused by susceptible organisms

Mechanism of Action:
Ciprofloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for DNA replication, transcription, and repair. This inhibition leads to bacterial cell death.

Dosage and Administration:

• Typical adult dose: 500–750 mg every 12 hours, depending on the severity and type of infection.

• Route: Oral

• Tablets should be swallowed whole with water, before or after meals.

• Avoid taking with dairy products or calcium-fortified juices as they may reduce absorption.

• Maintain adequate hydration during treatment.

Precautions:

• Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or other quinolones.

• Use with caution in patients with epilepsy or CNS disorders (may increase risk of seizures).

• Avoid excessive sunlight or UV exposure during treatment (photosensitivity risk).

• May interact with antacids, iron, or zinc supplements (reduce absorption).

• Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless clearly necessary.

Possible Side Effects:

• Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea

• Dizziness or headache

• Abdominal pain

• Photosensitivity (skin reactions to sunlight)

• Rare: tendon inflammation or rupture, especially in elderly or corticosteroid users

• Very rare: peripheral neuropathy or mood changes
