Ornidazole 500 mg

Pharmacological Class:
Nitroimidazole antimicrobial agent

Indications:
Used for the treatment and prevention of infections caused by anaerobic bacteria and protozoa, including:

• Amoebiasis (intestinal and hepatic)

• Giardiasis

• Trichomoniasis

• Bacterial vaginosis

• Anaerobic infections (abdominal, pelvic, or dental infections)

• Pre- and postoperative prophylaxis in anaerobic contamination risk surgeries

Mechanism of Action:
Ornidazole enters susceptible organisms and disrupts DNA synthesis, leading to cell death. It is effective against anaerobic bacteria and protozoa.

Dosage:

• Usual adult dose: 500–1000 mg twice daily, depending on infection type and severity.

• Duration: typically 5–10 days.

• For prophylaxis: 500 mg before surgery and continued postoperatively as directed.

• Take with or after food to reduce gastrointestinal discomfort.

Precautions:

• Avoid alcohol during treatment and for 48 hours after the last dose (risk of disulfiram-like reaction).

• Use cautiously in patients with liver impairment or CNS disorders (epilepsy).

• Not recommended during first trimester of pregnancy unless clearly necessary.

• Dose adjustment may be required in elderly or those with hepatic dysfunction.

Possible Side Effects:

• Nausea, vomiting, metallic taste

• Dizziness or headache

• Abdominal pain or diarrhea

• Fatigue or weakness

• Rare: seizures, peripheral neuropathy with prolonged use
