Active Ingredient:

• Verapamil hydrochloride 240 mg

Therapeutic Class:
Calcium channel blocker – Non-dihydropyridine

Indications:

• Hypertension (high blood pressure)

• Angina pectoris (chest pain)

• Cardiac arrhythmias (e.g., supraventricular tachycardia, atrial fibrillation/flutter)

• Used when sustained-release therapy is preferred for once-daily dosing.

Dosage:

• Usual adult dose: One 240 mg tablet once daily, preferably in the morning or as directed by the physician.

• Should be swallowed whole, not crushed or chewed, to maintain extended-release properties.

• Dose adjustments may be required based on blood pressure, heart rate, and clinical response.

Mechanism of Action:

• Verapamil blocks calcium channels in cardiac and vascular smooth muscle.

• Reduces myocardial contractility, heart rate, and conduction velocity, and causes vasodilation, lowering blood pressure and cardiac workload.

Precautions:

• Contraindicated in:

  • Severe hypotension

  • Cardiogenic shock

  • Sick sinus syndrome or second/third-degree AV block (without pacemaker)

  • Severe left ventricular dysfunction

  • Hypersensitivity to verapamil

• Use with caution in:

  • Heart failure

  • Bradycardia

  • Liver impairment

  • Patients on other antihypertensive or antiarrhythmic drugs

• Monitor blood pressure, heart rate, ECG, and liver function regularly.

Possible Side Effects:

• Constipation

• Dizziness or lightheadedness

• Headache

• Fatigue

• Peripheral edema (swelling of hands/feet)

• Rare: bradycardia, hypotension, heart block, or liver enzyme abnormalities
