Medication Name: Gaviscon Double Action 24 Sachets

Pharmacological Class:
Antacid and reflux suppressant

Active Ingredients (per 10 ml sachet):

• Sodium alginate 500 mg

• Sodium bicarbonate 213 mg

• Calcium carbonate 325 mg

Indications:

• Relief of heartburn and acid indigestion

• Treatment of symptoms associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

• Provides dual action: neutralizes acid and forms a protective barrier

Mechanism of Action:

• Sodium alginate reacts with gastric acid to form a viscous gel (“raft”) that floats on top of stomach contents, preventing reflux.

• Sodium bicarbonate and calcium carbonate neutralize excess stomach acid, providing fast symptom relief.

Dosage and Administration:

• Adults and children over 12 years: 1–2 sachets after meals and at bedtime, up to 4 times daily.

• Shake well before use and consume the contents directly from the sachet.

Contraindications:

• Hypersensitivity to any component

• Severe renal impairment or hypercalcemia

• Sodium-restricted or low-salt diets (use with caution)

Precautions:

• Contains sodium; use cautiously in patients with hypertension or congestive heart failure

• Avoid taking large doses for extended periods without medical supervision

Common Adverse Effects:

• Mild bloating or flatulence

• Rarely: constipation or allergic skin reactions
