Active Ingredient:
Ceftriaxone 1000 mg

Pharmacological Class:
Third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic

Indications:
Used for the treatment of a wide range of bacterial infections, including:

  • Lower and upper respiratory tract infections (pneumonia, bronchitis)

  • Urinary tract infections

  • Skin and soft tissue infections

  • Bone and joint infections

  • Intra-abdominal infections

  • Gonorrhea

  • Meningitis

  • Septicemia and other systemic bacterial infections

Mechanism of Action:
Ceftriaxone acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.

Dosage and Administration:

  • Adults: 1–2 g once daily, or divided every 12 hours depending on infection severity.

  • Children: 50–75 mg/kg/day (maximum 2 g/day).

  • Administered intramuscularly (IM) or intravenously (IV).

  • For IM injection, reconstitute with sterile water or 1% lidocaine solution to reduce injection pain.

Precautions:

  • Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.

  • Use cautiously in patients with a history of penicillin allergy.

  • Dose adjustment may be needed in renal or hepatic impairment.

  • Avoid mixing or administering simultaneously with calcium-containing solutions (especially in neonates).

Possible Side Effects:

  • Local pain, tenderness, or swelling at injection site

  • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea

  • Headache or dizziness

  • Skin rash or pruritus

  • Rare: Hypersensitivity reactions, pseudomembranous colitis, or hematologic changes
