Atacand Plus 16/12.5 mg (14 Tablets)

Active Ingredients:

• Candesartan cilexetil 16 mg (Angiotensin II receptor blocker – ARB)

• Hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg (Thiazide diuretic)

Therapeutic Class:
Antihypertensive combination (ARB + diuretic)

Indications:

• Treatment of essential hypertension (high blood pressure) in adults whose blood pressure is not adequately controlled by monotherapy with candesartan or hydrochlorothiazide alone.

• May be used as a fixed-dose combination for maintenance therapy once the optimal dose of each component has been established.

Dosage:

• Recommended dose: One tablet once daily.

• Can be taken with or without food, at the same time each day.

• Dosage should be individualized according to the patient’s blood pressure response.

• Not recommended as initial therapy for hypertension.

Mechanism of Action:

• Candesartan: Blocks angiotensin II receptors, leading to relaxation of blood vessels, decreased vascular resistance, and reduced blood pressure.

• Hydrochlorothiazide: Increases excretion of sodium and water through the kidneys, reducing plasma volume and aiding in blood pressure control.

Precautions:

• Contraindicated in:

  • Pregnancy (especially during 2nd and 3rd trimesters)

  • Severe renal impairment or anuria

  • Hypersensitivity to candesartan, hydrochlorothiazide, or sulfonamide derivatives

• Use cautiously in patients with:

  • Kidney or liver impairment

  • Gout, diabetes, or electrolyte disturbances (low potassium or sodium)

• Regular monitoring of kidney function, serum electrolytes, and blood pressure is recommended.

• Avoid concurrent use with potassium supplements or potassium-sparing diuretics unless directed by a physician.

• May cause dizziness or lightheadedness—avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until effects are known.

Possible Side Effects:

• Dizziness or fatigue

• Headache

• Low blood pressure (especially after the first dose)

• Increased urination

• Muscle cramps or weakness (due to electrolyte imbalance)

• Increased uric acid or blood glucose

• Rare: photosensitivity, rash, or allergic reactions
