Medication Name: Flagyl 500 mg Tablets (20 Tablets)
Active Ingredient: Metronidazole 500 mg

Pharmacologic Class: Nitroimidazole antibacterial and antiprotozoal agent

Indications:

• Treatment of infections caused by anaerobic bacteria.

• Amoebiasis (intestinal or liver infection caused by Entamoeba histolytica).

• Giardiasis (intestinal infection caused by Giardia lamblia).

• Trichomoniasis (infection caused by Trichomonas vaginalis).

• Bacterial vaginosis and pelvic infections.

• Dental infections and postoperative anaerobic infections.

Dosage and Administration:

• Adults: Usually 500 mg every 8 hours (three times daily) or as prescribed.

• The exact dose and duration depend on the type and severity of infection.

• Take with food or after meals to reduce stomach upset.

• Swallow tablets whole with water.

• Complete the full course even if symptoms improve.

Contraindications:

• Hypersensitivity to metronidazole or other nitroimidazole derivatives.

• Avoid use in the first trimester of pregnancy unless clearly necessary.

Precautions:

• Use with caution in patients with liver disease or central nervous system disorders.

• Avoid alcohol during treatment and for 48 hours after the last dose due to risk of disulfiram-like reaction (flushing, nausea, vomiting).

• Long-term or repeated use may cause peripheral neuropathy (numbness or tingling).

Common Side Effects:

• Nausea, vomiting, or abdominal discomfort

• Metallic taste in the mouth

• Headache or dizziness

• Darkened urine (harmless and temporary)

Serious Side Effects (rare):

• Tingling or numbness in hands or feet

• Seizures (very rare)

• Severe allergic reactions such as rash, swelling, or difficulty breathing
