      Anaerobic bacterial infections (intra-abdominal, pelvic, or respiratory)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      Septicemia and endocarditis caused by anaerobic organisms<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      Bone and joint infections<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      Central nervous system infections (e.g., brain abscess)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      Gynecological infections (pelvic inflammatory disease, endometritis)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      Prophylaxis for anaerobic infections in surgery (especially colorectal and gynecological)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Mechanism of Action:<\/strong>
      Metronidazole enters bacterial and protozoal cells and disrupts DNA synthesis through formation of toxic intermediates, leading to cell death.<\/p>\n

      Dosage and Administration:<\/strong><\/p>\n

        Adult usual dose:<\/strong> 500 mg (one vial) every 8 hours by slow IV infusion over 30\u201360 minutes.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      • \n

        Adjust dose in patients with severe hepatic impairment.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      • \n

        Do not administer by IV bolus injection.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      • \n

        Switch to oral therapy as soon as possible when clinically appropriate.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Side Effects:<\/strong><\/p>\n

        • \n

          Nausea, vomiting, or metallic taste<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

        • \n

          Headache or dizziness<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

        • \n

          Local irritation at injection site<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

        • \n

          Rare: seizures, peripheral neuropathy, or allergic reaction<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Precautions:<\/strong><\/p>\n

          • \n

            Avoid alcohol during and for 48 hours after therapy (risk of disulfiram-like reaction)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

          • \n

            Use with caution in patients with liver disease, central nervous system disorders, or history of blood dyscrasias<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

          • \n

            Monitor liver function in prolonged therapy<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

          • \n

            Not recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy unless clearly needed<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
