Medication Name: Ozempic 0.5 mg Pre-filled Pen

Active Ingredient:
Semaglutide 0.5 mg per dose

Pharmacological Class:
GLP-1 receptor agonist (Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 analogue)

Indications:
Used in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus to:

• Improve blood glucose control as monotherapy or in combination with other oral antidiabetic agents or insulin.

• Reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events (heart attack, stroke, or death) in patients with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease.

Dosage Form:
Pre-filled multidose injection pen containing 2 mg/1.5 ml solution for subcutaneous injection (delivers 0.5 mg per dose).

Administration:

• Inject subcutaneously once weekly in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm.

• Rotate injection sites with each administration.

• The 0.5 mg dose is typically used after 4 weeks of 0.25 mg for dose escalation.

• Can be continued as a maintenance dose or increased further to 1 mg based on glycemic response.

Mechanism of Action:
Semaglutide acts as an analogue of the natural incretin hormone GLP-1. It stimulates insulin secretion in response to elevated blood glucose, suppresses glucagon secretion, delays gastric emptying, and promotes satiety leading to reduced food intake.

Common Side Effects:

• Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation

• Loss of appetite

• Abdominal discomfort

• Headache or fatigue

• Injection site redness or irritation

Precautions:

• Not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

• Monitor for pancreatitis symptoms (persistent severe abdominal pain).

• Avoid use in patients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2.

• Adjust dose of other antidiabetic medications to prevent hypoglycemia if used in combination.

Storage:

• Keep unused pens refrigerated (2–8°C).

• Once in use, the pen may be kept at room temperature (below 30°C) for up to 6 weeks.

• Protect from light and heat. Do not freeze.
