Pharmacological Class:
Antiprotozoal and antiviral agent

Indications:
Used for the treatment of gastrointestinal infections caused by protozoa and certain viruses, including:

• Giardiasis

• Amoebiasis

• Cryptosporidiosis

• Rotavirus or norovirus-associated diarrhea in children

• Other parasitic intestinal infections

Mechanism of Action:
Nitazoxanide interferes with the pyruvate:ferredoxin oxidoreductase (PFOR) enzyme-dependent electron transfer reaction, which is essential for anaerobic metabolism in protozoa and some bacteria, leading to inhibition of their energy production and death.

Dosage:

• Children (1–3 years): 5 ml (100 mg) every 12 hours for 3 days

• Children (4–11 years): 10 ml (200 mg) every 12 hours for 3 days

• Adults and adolescents (≥12 years): 25 ml (500 mg) every 12 hours for 3 days

• Shake well before use and administer with food to enhance absorption.

Precautions:

• Use with caution in patients with hepatic impairment.

• Not recommended for infants under 1 year without physician supervision.

• If symptoms persist beyond 3 days, medical re-evaluation is required.

Possible Side Effects:

• Abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting

• Headache or dizziness

• Discolored urine (yellowish-green tint)

• Mild diarrhea

• Rare: hypersensitivity reactions (rash or itching)
