Active Ingredient:
Cefixime 200 mg

Pharmacological Class:
Third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic

Indications:
Used to treat bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms, including:

• Respiratory tract infections (pharyngitis, tonsillitis, bronchitis, pneumonia)

• Otitis media

• Urinary tract infections

• Gonorrhea (uncomplicated)

• Skin and soft tissue infections

Mechanism of Action:
Cefixime inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.

Dosage and Administration:

• Adults and adolescents (≥12 years): 200 mg every 12 hours or 400 mg once daily.

• Children (≥6 months): Dose adjusted by weight (8 mg/kg/day, once daily or divided twice daily).

• Route: Oral

• May be taken with or without food, but taking after meals can help reduce gastrointestinal upset.

Precautions:

• Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to cephalosporins or penicillins.

• Caution in patients with renal impairment; dose adjustment may be needed.

• Complete the full prescribed course to prevent resistance.

Possible Side Effects:

• Gastrointestinal upset (nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain)

• Headache, dizziness

• Skin rash or allergic reactions

• Rare: Pseudomembranous colitis, transient liver enzyme elevation
