Pharmacological Class:
Third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic

Indications:
Used for the treatment of various bacterial infections, including:

• Lower respiratory tract infections (e.g., pneumonia, bronchitis)

• Urinary tract infections

• Skin and soft tissue infections

• Intra-abdominal infections

• Bone and joint infections

• Gonorrhea

• Meningitis

• Septicemia

Mechanism of Action:
Ceftriaxone inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins, leading to cell lysis and bacterial death.

Dosage:

• Adults: 1–2 g once daily or divided into two doses every 12 hours, depending on infection type and severity.

• Children: 50–75 mg/kg/day (maximum 2 g per day).

• Administered intramuscularly (IM) or intravenously (IV) as directed by a healthcare provider.

Precautions:

• Contraindicated in patients with severe hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.

• Use with caution in patients with penicillin allergy.

• Dose adjustment may be required in severe hepatic or renal impairment.

• Avoid mixing or administering with calcium-containing IV solutions in neonates.

Possible Side Effects:

• Pain or swelling at the injection site

• Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting

• Rash or mild allergic reactions

• Headache or dizziness

• Rare: Pseudomembranous colitis, hemolytic anemia, elevated liver enzymes
