Septazole 10 Tablets

Medication Name: Septazole Tablets (Standard Strength) (Co-trimoxazole)

Active Ingredient:

• Trimethoprim (TMP): 80 mg
• Sulfamethoxazole (SMX): 400 mg (Often referred to as TMP/SMX 80/400 mg)

Pharmacologic Class: Combination antibacterial agent (Sulfonamide and Diaminopyrimidine)

Indications:

Septazole is used to treat infections caused by bacteria susceptible to co-trimoxazole, including:

• Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Including pyelonephritis (kidney infection) and cystitis.
• Respiratory Tract Infections: Such as acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis and acute otitis media (ear infection).
• Pneumocystis jirovecii Pneumonia (PJP): Both for treatment and prophylaxis (prevention), especially in immunocompromised patients (like those with HIV/AIDS).
• Gastrointestinal Infections: Such as Shigellosis and Traveler’s Diarrhea.
• Skin and Soft Tissue Infections.

Dosage and Administration (for adults):

• Standard Dosage (for most acute infections): Two tablets (80/400 mg strength) taken every 12 hours (twice daily).
• Duration: Treatment typically lasts for 5 to 14 days, depending on the infection.
• Administration: Take with a full glass of water, with or without food. It is crucial to maintain adequate fluid intake to prevent crystal formation in the urine.
• PJP Prophylaxis: May be taken as one Standard Strength tablet (80/400 mg) daily, or several times a week, as directed by a healthcare provider.
• Important: Dosage must be strictly determined by a physician based on the type, severity, and location of the infection, and the patient’s renal function.

Contraindications:

• Hypersensitivity (allergic reaction) to trimethoprim, sulfamethoxazole, or any sulfonamide-derived drugs.
• Severe liver disease or severe renal failure.
• Documented megaloblastic anemia due to folate deficiency.
• Infants under 6 weeks of age.
• Patients with G6PD deficiency (risk of hemolytic anemia).

Common Side Effects:

• Gastrointestinal issues (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite).
• Skin rash (requires immediate medical assessment).
• Headache.

Serious Side Effects (rare):

• Severe allergic reactions (swelling of the face, throat, difficulty breathing).
• Life-threatening skin conditions (Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis).
• Hematologic changes (anemia, low white blood cell count, low platelet count).
• Liver or kidney problems.
