Medication Name: Moduretic 5/50mg 30 Tablets

Active Ingredients (per tablet):

• Amiloride Hydrochloride 5 mg

• Hydrochlorothiazide 50 mg

Pharmacological Class:
Combination diuretic (Potassium-sparing + Thiazide diuretic)

Dosage Form:
Tablets — 30 per pack

Indications:

• Treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure).

• Management of edema (fluid retention) associated with congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis, or certain kidney disorders.

• Used when there is a risk of low potassium levels (hypokalemia) due to thiazide therapy.

Mechanism of Action:

• Hydrochlorothiazide increases the excretion of sodium and water by acting on the distal tubules of the kidney.

• Amiloride helps retain potassium by blocking sodium reabsorption in the distal tubules, preventing potassium loss.
  The combination provides effective diuresis while minimizing potassium depletion.

Dosage:

• Usual adult dose: 1 tablet daily, preferably in the morning to avoid nighttime urination.

• Dosage may be adjusted according to patient response and clinical condition.

Precautions:

• Avoid potassium supplements or potassium-rich diets unless prescribed.

• Use cautiously in patients with kidney or liver impairment.

• Monitor electrolytes, especially potassium and sodium levels, during therapy.

• Contraindicated in severe renal impairment, hyperkalemia, or Addison’s disease.

Common Side Effects:

• Dizziness or lightheadedness

• Increased urination

• Headache

• Fatigue

• Gastrointestinal upset

• Elevated potassium levels (hyperkalemia) in susceptible patients
