Medication Name: Mepafuran 100mg Capsules

Active Ingredient:
Nitrofurantoin 100 mg (sustained-release formulation)

Pharmacological Class:
Urinary antiseptic / antibacterial (nitrofuran derivative)

Dosage Form:
Prolonged-release capsules for oral use — 20 capsules per pack

Indications:

• Treatment of acute uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs)

• Prevention of recurrent urinary tract infections

Mechanism of Action:
Nitrofurantoin inhibits bacterial enzymes involved in cell wall and nucleic acid synthesis, resulting in bacterial cell death. It is bactericidal against most common urinary pathogens, including E. coli and Enterococcus species.

Dosage and Administration:

• Adults: 100 mg every 12 hours (twice daily) with meals.

• Prophylaxis: 50–100 mg once daily at bedtime.

• Capsules must be swallowed whole and taken with food or milk to enhance absorption and minimize stomach upset.

Side Effects:

• Gastrointestinal discomfort (nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain)

• Headache or dizziness

• Urine discoloration (dark yellow or brown, harmless)

• Rare: allergic reactions, pulmonary symptoms, liver dysfunction, peripheral neuropathy (especially with long-term use)

Precautions:

• Contraindicated in severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance < 60 mL/min).

• Avoid use at term pregnancy or in newborns under 1 month (risk of hemolytic anemia).

• Use cautiously in patients with hepatic impairment or pulmonary disease.

• Periodic monitoring of renal and liver function during prolonged therapy is recommended.
