Medication Name: Levoxin 500mg Vial (100ml)

Active Ingredient:
Levofloxacin 500 mg (as levofloxacin hemihydrate) per 100 ml solution

Pharmacological Class:
Fluoroquinolone antibiotic

Indications:
Used for treatment of bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms, including:

• Community-acquired and hospital-acquired pneumonia

• Acute bacterial sinusitis

• Chronic bronchitis exacerbations

• Urinary tract infections and pyelonephritis

• Skin and soft tissue infections

• Prostatitis

• Intra-abdominal infections (as part of combination therapy)

Mechanism of Action:
Levofloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to bacterial cell death.

Dosage and Administration:

• Route: Intravenous infusion only

• Typical adult dose: 500 mg once daily (infused over 60 minutes)

• Dose adjustment may be required in renal impairment (CrCl <50 ml/min).

• Switch to oral therapy as soon as clinically possible when the patient improves.

Precautions:

• Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to levofloxacin or other quinolones.

• Use cautiously in patients with seizure disorders or QT prolongation.

• Avoid co-administration with antacids or supplements containing iron, magnesium, or zinc (may reduce efficacy if taken orally).

• Ensure adequate hydration to prevent crystalluria.

• Avoid exposure to sunlight or UV light due to risk of photosensitivity.

• Not recommended during pregnancy, lactation, or in children under 18 years.

Possible Side Effects:

• Nausea, diarrhea, headache, dizziness

• Injection site reactions (pain, redness)

• Insomnia or nervousness

• Rash or itching

• Rare: tendonitis or tendon rupture, CNS effects (tremor, hallucination), QT prolongation, hepatotoxicity
