Ciprofloxacin 750 mg

Pharmacological Class:
Fluoroquinolone antibiotic

Indications:
Used to treat moderate to severe bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms, including:

• Respiratory tract infections

• Urinary tract infections and pyelonephritis

• Gastrointestinal infections (e.g., typhoid, traveler’s diarrhea)

• Skin and soft tissue infections

• Bone and joint infections

• Certain sexually transmitted infections

Mechanism of Action:
Ciprofloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes required for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, and repair. This leads to inhibition of bacterial growth and cell death.

Dosage and Administration:

• Adults: 750 mg every 12 hours (depends on infection type and severity).

• Route: Oral

• Take with plenty of water; avoid concurrent intake with dairy products or calcium-enriched drinks.

• Continue for the full course as prescribed even if symptoms improve.

Precautions:

• Contraindicated in patients allergic to fluoroquinolones.

• Use with caution in patients with renal impairment, epilepsy, or CNS disorders.

• Avoid excessive sun exposure during treatment.

• Do not take concurrently with tizanidine or within a few hours of antacids or supplements containing magnesium, aluminum, iron, or zinc.

Possible Side Effects:

• Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea

• Dizziness, headache, or insomnia

• Photosensitivity

• Rare: tendon rupture (especially in elderly or corticosteroid users)

• QT prolongation, allergic reactions in rare cases
