Medication Name: Capozide 50/25mg 30 Tablets

Active Ingredients (per tablet):

• Captopril 50 mg

• Hydrochlorothiazide 25 mg

Pharmacological Class:

• Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme (ACE) Inhibitor and Thiazide Diuretic Combination

Dosage Form:

• Oral tablets — 30 per pack

Indications:

• Treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure) in patients who require a combination of an ACE inhibitor and a diuretic.

Mechanism of Action:

• Captopril: Inhibits ACE, reducing the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II, leading to vasodilation and decreased blood pressure.

• Hydrochlorothiazide: Increases sodium and water excretion through the kidneys, reducing plasma volume and lowering blood pressure further.

Dosage:

• Usual adult dose: 1 tablet once or twice daily, depending on the patient’s blood pressure response.

• May be taken before or after food, preferably at the same time each day.

Precautions:

• Monitor serum electrolytes (especially potassium and sodium) and renal function regularly.

• Avoid potassium supplements or potassium-sparing diuretics unless prescribed.

• Use with caution in patients with renal impairment, diabetes, or systemic lupus erythematosus.

• Contraindicated in pregnancy and history of ACE inhibitor–induced angioedema.

Common Side Effects:

• Dizziness or lightheadedness

• Dry cough

• Increased urination

• Fatigue or weakness

• Elevated blood urea nitrogen (BUN) or creatinine

• Rash or taste disturbance (due to captopril)

Note:
Capozide provides a synergistic antihypertensive effect by combining the vasodilatory action of captopril with the diuretic effect of hydrochlorothiazide, often allowing for lower doses of each component and improved blood pressure control.
