Atacand 16 mg (14 Tablets)

Active Ingredient:

• Candesartan cilexetil 16 mg

Therapeutic Class:
Angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) – Antihypertensive

Indications:

• Treatment of essential hypertension (high blood pressure) in adults

• Management of heart failure with reduced ejection fraction, especially in patients intolerant to ACE inhibitors

• May be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents such as calcium channel blockers, diuretics, or beta-blockers

Dosage:

• Hypertension:

  • Usual starting dose: 8 mg once daily

  • Maintenance dose: 8–32 mg once daily, depending on blood pressure response

• Heart failure:

  • Starting dose: 4 mg once daily

  • Titrate gradually up to 32 mg once daily or the maximum tolerated dose

• Can be taken with or without food, at the same time each day.

Mechanism of Action:

• Candesartan selectively blocks the binding of angiotensin II to AT₁ receptors in vascular smooth muscle and adrenal glands.

• This leads to vasodilation, reduced secretion of aldosterone, decreased blood pressure, and reduced workload on the heart.

Precautions:

• Contraindicated in:

  • Pregnancy (especially during 2nd and 3rd trimesters)

  • Severe hepatic or renal impairment

  • Hypersensitivity to candesartan or any component of the formulation

• Use cautiously in patients with:

  • Renal artery stenosis or dehydration

  • Electrolyte imbalance (especially low sodium)

  • Heart failure or impaired renal function

• Regular monitoring of kidney function and serum potassium is recommended.

• Avoid concurrent use with potassium supplements or potassium-sparing diuretics unless prescribed.

• May cause dizziness—use caution when driving or operating machinery.

Possible Side Effects:

• Dizziness or lightheadedness

• Headache

• Fatigue

• Hypotension (especially after the first dose)

• Elevated potassium levels (hyperkalemia)

• Rare: kidney function changes, rash, or angioedema
