Active Ingredient:

• Atenolol 50 mg

Therapeutic Class:
Selective Beta₁-Adrenergic Blocker (Cardioselective Beta-Blocker)

Indications:

• Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)

• Angina Pectoris (Chest Pain)

• Cardiac Arrhythmias (Irregular Heartbeat)

• Post-Myocardial Infarction (After Heart Attack) – Secondary Prevention

Dosage:

• Hypertension: Usually 50 mg once daily; may be increased to 100 mg once daily if needed.

• Angina: 50–100 mg daily (single or divided dose).

• Arrhythmias: 50–100 mg daily, adjusted individually.

• Post-Myocardial Infarction: Typically 50 mg twice daily, then 100 mg once daily as maintenance.

• Can be taken with or without food.

• Dosage adjustment is required in renal impairment.

Mechanism of Action:
Atenolol selectively blocks beta₁-receptors in cardiac tissue, leading to:

• Decreased heart rate and cardiac output

• Reduced myocardial oxygen demand

• Lowered blood pressure

• Stabilization of heart rhythm

Precautions:

• Contraindicated in:

  • Sinus bradycardia or heart block

  • Cardiogenic shock

  • Untreated heart failure

  • Hypersensitivity to atenolol

• Use cautiously in:

  • Diabetes mellitus (masks hypoglycemia symptoms)

  • Peripheral vascular disease

  • Asthma or COPD (may cause bronchospasm)

  • Thyroid disorders (may mask tachycardia)

• Avoid abrupt discontinuation to prevent rebound hypertension or angina.

Possible Side Effects:

• Fatigue, dizziness, or cold extremities

• Bradycardia (slow pulse)

• Hypotension (low blood pressure)

• Nausea or gastrointestinal upset

• Sleep disturbances (rare)
