Pharmacological Class:
Third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic

Indications:
Used for the treatment of moderate to severe bacterial infections, including:

• Lower and upper respiratory tract infections (pneumonia, bronchitis)

• Urinary tract infections

• Skin and soft tissue infections

• Bone and joint infections

• Intra-abdominal infections

• Gonorrhea

• Meningitis

• Septicemia

Mechanism of Action:
Ceftriaxone acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to cell lysis and bacterial death.

Dosage:

• Adults: 500 mg to 1 g once daily, or divided every 12 hours depending on infection severity.

• Children: 50–75 mg/kg/day (not exceeding 2 g/day).

• Administered intramuscularly (IM) or intravenously (IV) according to medical advice.

• For IM use, reconstitute with sterile water or 1% lidocaine solution to reduce injection pain.

Precautions:

• Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.

• Use cautiously in those allergic to penicillins.

• Dose adjustment may be needed in renal or hepatic impairment.

• Avoid concomitant administration with calcium-containing IV solutions, especially in neonates.

Possible Side Effects:

• Local pain, redness, or induration at the injection site

• Diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting

• Skin rash or itching

• Headache or dizziness

• Rarely: Allergic reactions, pseudomembranous colitis, or changes in blood counts
