Medication Name: Decancit SR tablets
Active Ingredient: Escitalopram oxalate (usually 10–20 mg, sustained-release formulation)
Drug Class: Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant

Indications:

Decancit SR is primarily used for:

1. Major depressive disorder (MDD) – to improve mood, energy, and interest in daily activities.

2. Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) – to reduce excessive worry, tension, and anxiety symptoms.

3. Sometimes prescribed for panic disorder, OCD, or social anxiety disorder, depending on medical advice.

Mechanism of Action:

• Escitalopram selectively inhibits serotonin reuptake in the brain.

• Increases serotonin levels in the synaptic cleft, improving mood, anxiety, and emotional regulation.

• Sustained-release (SR) formulation ensures steady blood levels over 24 hours, reducing fluctuations and improving compliance.

Dosage and Administration:

• Typical adult dose: 10 mg once daily, may increase to 20 mg once daily based on response and tolerance.

• Take with or without food at the same time each day.

• Swallow the tablet whole; do not crush or chew the SR formulation.

• Do not stop suddenly; taper gradually under medical supervision to avoid withdrawal symptoms.

Side Effects:

Common:

• Nausea

• Dry mouth

• Drowsiness or fatigue

• Insomnia

• Increased sweating

• Headache

Less common but serious:

• Suicidal thoughts (especially in young adults)

• Serotonin syndrome (confusion, agitation, rapid heartbeat, high temperature)

• Severe allergic reactions (rare)

Warnings and Precautions:

• Avoid abrupt discontinuation.

• Use caution in patients with:

  • Liver or kidney impairment

  • Seizure disorders

  • Bipolar disorder (may trigger mania)

• Avoid alcohol or CNS depressants.

• May interact with other serotonergic drugs, anticoagulants, or certain migraine medications.

• Regular follow-up is recommended during the first few weeks of therapy.

Store at room temperature (below 25°C), away from moisture and sunlight.
