Indications:

Mild to moderate hypertension (high blood pressure)

Angina pectoris (chronic chest pain)

Cardiac arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats)

Post-myocardial infarction (secondary prevention after heart attack)

Sometimes used in anxiety-related tachycardia (off-label)
Dosage:
-
Hypertension: Initial dose 25–50 mg once daily; may increase gradually to 100 mg/day if needed.

Angina or arrhythmia: 25–50 mg once or twice daily, adjusted as required.

Post-myocardial infarction: Often started with 25–50 mg twice daily, then 100 mg once daily maintenance.
-
May be taken with or without food.

Dosage adjustment is required in renal impairment.
Mechanism of Action:
Atenolol selectively blocks beta₁-receptors in the heart, leading to:

Reduced heart rate and cardiac output

Lowered blood pressure

Decreased oxygen demand by the heart

Stabilization of heart rhythm
Precautions:

Contraindicated in:

Severe bradycardia or heart block

Cardiogenic shock

Uncontrolled heart failure

Known hypersensitivity to atenolol

Diabetes mellitus (may mask low blood sugar symptoms)

Asthma or COPD (risk of bronchospasm)

Peripheral vascular disease (may worsen circulation)

Thyrotoxicosis (may mask tachycardia)

Do not stop abruptly; taper gradually to avoid rebound angina or hypertension.
