Medication Name: Spirex 3MIU 10 Tablets

Active Ingredient:
Spiramycin 3 million IU

Pharmacological Class:
Macrolide antibiotic

Indications:
Used to treat infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including:

• Respiratory tract infections (pharyngitis, tonsillitis, sinusitis, bronchitis, pneumonia)

• Skin and soft tissue infections

• Toxoplasmosis (especially in pregnancy)

• Dental and oral infections

• Ear, nose, and throat infections

Mechanism of Action:
Spiramycin binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit of bacterial cells, inhibiting protein synthesis and stopping bacterial growth (bacteriostatic effect).

Dosage:

• Usual adult dose: 1 tablet (3 MIU) two or three times daily, depending on infection severity.

• Should be taken before meals with a full glass of water.

• Treatment duration depends on the type and severity of infection (typically 5–10 days).

Precautions:

• Use with caution in patients with liver impairment.

• Not recommended for patients allergic to macrolides (e.g., erythromycin, clarithromycin).

• Safe alternative during pregnancy for treatment of toxoplasmosis.

• Avoid concurrent use with other hepatotoxic drugs.

Possible Side Effects:

• Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain

• Diarrhea

• Loss of appetite

• Mild increase in liver enzymes

• Skin rash or allergic reactions (rare)

• Very rare: cholestatic jaundice or severe hypersensitivity reaction
